Rascal Flatts guitarist Joe Don Rooney, who recently opened up about his battle with alcohol addiction, ended up spending most of his time in the bathroom during a recent flight to Nashville when he suffered a panic attack. He shared his story on X, saying that his anxiety disorder was triggered by a long delay on the tarmac. The ordeal started at 11pm when the plane landed in Nashville, and it didn't end until he picked up his bags at 4am. "So I started freaking out a bit and I had to take the one pill I had left of the medication I take nowadays for my anxiety," Joe Don writes. "At 1 hour I was in the lavatory trying to breathe slowly and deeply as the first beads of sweat started to drop from my forehead." The flight attendants were understanding and allowed him to stay in the bathroom as long as he stepped out when people had to use it. They offered him a drink, but Joe Don explained that he was in treatment and has been sober for 28 months. He tried meditation music, counting exercises and calling a sober friend. These methods helped but he was still sweating as the wait on the tarmac continued. He was finally able to leave the plane at 2am, but it took another 2 hours to get his bags. He's not blaming the airline or the staff on the plane. He is sharing the story hoping that other people can relate.
