Fifty United Church and the Panzeroli Wagon are bringing some of the traditional tastes of the Winona Peach Festival to town for the weekend of Aug. 28 to 30. While this year's peach festival was cancelled back in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fifty United is hosting the contactless, Peach DriveThrough event to coincide with the peach festival's original date. Fifty United Church member Kathy Cushnie said the church will be offering peach pies — both freshly baked and frozen — plus frozen cherry pies, peach jam and jelly and some strawberry/peach jam. Pies and jam can be ordered in advance online at www.fiftyunitedchurch.org or through the Fifty United Church Facebook page. Orders should be placed before Aug. 21, as supplies are limited. "We are asking that people get their pre-orders in as soon as possible," said Cushnie. The church, at 1455 Hwy. 8, will also have
sweet and sour sauce and fresh peaches available for purchase. To limit traffic congestion, customers are asked to indicate when they plan to pick up their goods when placing their online orders. Jeannie Brooks of Panzeroli Food Ltd. is also looking forward to this month's event. The Panzeroli Wagon has partnered with Fifty United at the peach festival for several years. After hearing about the
peach festival cancellation, Brooks reached out to Fifty United Church to offer some assistance. "They were going to lose out on our contribution," Brooks said. "I proposed the idea to the ladies, and they thought it was a good idea."
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Panzeroli, a mini pizza pocket inspired by a panzerotti. Brooks' parents, Louie and Florence Maifrini, developed the Panzeroli in 1990. "We always had panze
rottis growing up," said Brooks. "Dad wanted to make a small one. Between the two of them they came up with this recipe and called it Panzeroli because it's kind of like a panzerotti in a ravioli size." The product is filled with mozzarella, tomato sauce and select spices. Panzerolis are deep fried in canola oil and served with marinara dipping sauce. The Panzeroli name is a registered trademark. Brooks had hoped to do about 10 events this year with the Panzeroli Wagon but was forced to dramatically scale back those ex
pectations once the pandemic hit. Depending upon the success of the Fifty United event, Brooks may approach other communities to discuss the possibility of holding similar events. The Peach DriveThrough event runs Friday, Aug. 28, 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. While Fifty United is among the peach festival's member organizations, this month's event is operating independently from the Winona Peach Festival.
